Regenerative medicine techniques like stem cell therapy, prolotherapy, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy are revolutionizing the treatment of chronic pain. Double board-certified physiatrist Dr. Javier Placer, MD, and his team at Specialized Rehabilitation Physicians Group in Clermont and Orlando, Florida, have considerable expertise in using regenerative medicine to promote new, healthy tissue growth and reduce chronic pain. If you think you could benefit from this form of pain therapy, call the Specialized Rehabilitation Physicians Group today or book an appointment online.
What is Regenerative Medicine?
Regenerative medicine is an effective way to promote new tissue growth when normal healing processes aren’t enough. Its effects can reduce and, in some cases, eliminate chronic pain in joints and soft tissues. Your body has specialized cells that contain growth factors. These growth factors are essential in triggering the generation of new tissue, and your body floods any injured areas with growth factors when you hurt yourself.
Most often, your body heals itself with few, if any, lasting effects. However, some types of injury can’t or won’t heal completely following your body’s first round of healing.
Regenerative medicine uses cells taken from your body or donated for the purpose. Dr. Javier Placer, MD, injects concentrated solutions of these cells back into your body at the site of your pain. When they reach the target area, the cells trigger your body to start a new cycle of healing and gives the process a boost. As a result, tissues treated with regenerative therapies heal more completely.
Examples of Regenerative Medicine
There are several types of regenerative medicine that contain incredibly useful and versatile cells like cytokines, hyaluronic acid, and prolotherapy. Two of the main forms used at Specialized Rehabilitation Physicians Group are platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapies.
PRP Therapy
PRP comes from your own blood. The platelets in your blood have plentiful supplies of growth factors, which Dr. Javier Placer, MD, extracts from a sample of your blood using a centrifuge. He then injects the concentrated solution of harvested platelets back into your body where they’re needed.
Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cells can become any type of cell your body needs so they’re very effective at generating new tissues. You had plenty of stem cells when you were an infant, but the numbers drop as you age. It’s possible to harvest stem cells from your bone marrow or fatty tissues but donated amniotic or umbilical cord stem cells are also an option.
